PAST EXHIBITION

SPRINGS ETERNAL
July 22 – August 4, 2023

Springs Eternal is a group show of 12 contemporary artists displaying works from the 1970s to present. The exhibition will be held at the Fireplace Project located in the old Talmadge garage in Springs Historic District just across from the Pollock Krasner house. Curated by Alexander DiJulio is an East End summer exhibition of 12 contemporary painters with works from the 1970s to present. The artists include: Charis Ammon, Elise Ansel, Ross Bleckner, Scott Csoke, Noel de Lesseps, Chambliss Giobbi, Mitchell Johnson, Tin Nyguen, Emily Pettigrew, Mark Sabin, Thew Smoak and Nick Weber.

Inspired by the phrase hope “springs eternal” from 1751s An Essay on Man by Alexander Pope, Springs Eternal serves almost as a rallying call for East Hampton's most eccentric hamlet.

Perpetuating the infinity of nature and the timelessness of a place as it rests in the human memory, Springs Eternal brings together the practices of artists whose work stems from many different roots but whose work emotes a certain nostalgia. This inherent longing may be for a specific place at just the right time of day as in Emily Pettigrew's dusky White Road, Mulford Farm, 2023.

In other instances, we see more abstract works such as through the dense and textured thicket of Charis Ammon's tiny painting of the same name or in the sanded surface of the hazy psychedelia of Nick Weber's untitled portrait where the feeling of the work speaks volumes over its subject.

In a world where we are so rarely able to focus on the places we are at the time and to be present in our fondest memories, seek touchstones to connect back to the feeling of never ending days and endless summers, Springs Eternal.
